Support your local troops – Operation homemade cookies

By Staff | Apr 1, 2011

In support of our local Iowa National Guard and other area troops serving overseas, the Alpha Battery 1-94th Field Artillery Family Readiness Group (FRG) and the Estherville Chamber of Commerce have joined forces to support the troops and their families.

The group was formed in August when the men left for their year of deployment. The FRG meets monthly to share information and solve any issues that may arise. They also work on events involving the families.

With your help, the group will be collecting, packing and shipping Easter Care packages on Saturday, April 16, 2011. Save the date! Volunteers will be sending packages to all the local Guardsmen and any other local people serving OVERSEAS. Items will be collected until April 15. On April 16 the boxes will be packed for shipment.

The box that will be sent is a priority mailed box that is about the size of a big shoebox. Suggestions for items to put in the box are:

n DVDs, Books and Magazines. If history is a lesson I am sure that these types of items will be passed around until everyone has watched or read them.

n Letters. I would especially like to see schoolchildren write letters to be placed in the boxes. It would be nice to put Easter items in each box.

n Stationery to write home. Even in this day of instant communications, a letter is very important. They get to mail letters home for free, so stamps are not needed.

n Food. Pre-packed snacks, cookies, trail mix, power bars, granola, jerky, Slim Jims, gum and all kinds of candy.

n No items in glass. All items must be able to past a Customs inspection.

n No phone cards. Most of the troops have e-mail accounts and some have video capabilities. Each soldier will have two free 15-minute phone calls a week.

In addition to the items listed above, it is our goal to have a dozen homemade cookies in each package. That will require a 100 dozen homemeade cookies. Be creative; an Easter theme would be nice.

All items should be dropped off at the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce office at 620 First Ave. S. in Estherville prior to noon on Friday, April 15. If you have questions please call the chamber at 712-362-3541 or Gene Haukoos 712-209-0433.

For those with local loved ones serving overseas who are not attached to Alpha Battery please provide us with their APO/FPO address, and they will be added our care package list. The address’s can be dropped off at the chamber office, 620 1st Ave South, Estherville, IA 51334, faxed to 712-362-7742 or e-mailed to echamber@ncn.net .
