Former councilman Sawyer dies at 88

By Staff | Jun 13, 2014

Former long-time Estherville City Councilman Harold Sawyer, 88, passed away this past Thursday at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.

After serving for 36 years on the council, Sawyer chose not to run in 2011 and served his final meeting in December 2011.

In a Dec. 27, 2011 story in the Estherville Daily News, Sawyer said he was asked to consider filling the unexpired term of an at-large position in early 1975.

“Dick Sidles was the one who approached me and I thought, yes, this was something I would like to do.”

The best part of serving on the Council was shared in a concise statement that speaks volumes “I’ve enjoyed attending all of the meetings and seeing the City continue to function smoothly.”

Expanding on this sentiment, he added, “Serving the citizens of Estherville has enriched my life immensely and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being on the Council.”

Sawyer, a 1944 graduate of Estherville High School, worked at Golden Sun for 37 years.
