Special Olympians heading to national bocce ball competition
Special Olympians Chelsey Moffitt and Kelsey Shirk will travel to the national Special Olympic bocce ball competition June 14-21 in Trenton, N.J.
This will be Chelsey’s third Special Olympics national competition – out of three total held. She previously competed in Ames in 2006 and in Lincoln, Neb. in 2010. This will be Kelsey’s first competition.
They will join fellow Special Olympians Marcus Meyer and Robert Pilchird and coach Diane Courtney, all from Cedar Rapids, said Chelsey’s mother, Shirley. They will compete in singles, doubles and four-person teams.
“We’re going to follow,” Shirley said of herself and husband Paul.
The athletes will also enjoy a dinner-cruise around Staten Island and a Yankee junior league game. There will also be plenty of games and crafts.
“They’ll keep them busy,” Shirley said.
Paul said Chelsey and Kelsey took first at state two weeks ago with scores of 23-0 and 12-2.
