Friends group takes on summer projects

By Staff | Jun 27, 2014

This summer will likely be the biggest yet for major projects by the Friends of Fort Defiance.

After completing surfacing of Whitetail Ridge Interpretive Trail with crushed limestone last year, the group this spring completed the trailhead of the Spring Creek Trail at the native prairie area. The group also plans on doing similar surfacing of four or five access points of the multiple use prairie trail area on the south side of the park. Completion of all the trail projects was made possible through grants from the Emmet County Community Foundation.

On Tuesday the Friends group removed and replaced half the shingles of the park picnic shelter and they plan on completing the other half this Tuesday. Members also plan on staining the shelter uprights, bringing it to nearly new condition.

The group holds summer work sessions the first and third Tuesday of every month starting at 6 p.m. The group is dedicated to preserving and improving the park and providing environmental education.

Memberships in the Friends are $10 for individuals or families and may be sent to: Friends of Fort Defiance, P.O. Box 314, Estherville, IA 51334.
