Excel! Building to be open to public
The Excel!?Building will be open from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., just before the Sweet Corn Days parade Saturday, according to Economic Development Director Lyle Hevern.
“With a lot of people coming to downtown, we wanted to let people see the progress we’ve made.”?
Both floors of the building will be available for the public to look around, Hevern said.
“Studio 12 is our collaborative, co-working space for new businesses and ventures upstairs,”?Hevern said.
LearnAcre, a customer service training initative started by Mark Gruwell, is a tenant in Studio 12.
The main floor of the building was set aside for a coffee shop. The entrepreneurship competition in 2015 declared a winner, but personal and financial issues prevented that business owner from opening in the space.
“We have a little time, and we’re still envisioning a coffee shop in that space,”?Hevern said. “While we do have funds available, we’re looking for an entrepreneur with the capacity to make it happen.”
Hevern said he has been approached by a few people with an idea for the space, but those inquirers did not have a business plan, nor assets to put in, nor the ability to withstand the risk of starting a business.
“We’re here to help someone who is ready,”?Hevern said, “but they have to put some skin in the game, too.”?
Hevern said he anticipated community members would be pleased with what has been accomplished in the Excel!?Building.
