Honoring our veterans
The annual Estherville Veterans Day ceremony was held at its usual time-on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour-in front of the World War I monument in Library Square.
Pastor Cory Allard of the United Methodist Church led the ceremony.
“Today we honor all of our veterans,” she said. “But a national holiday is hardly enough to show you our gratitude and respect. We cannot undo anything that you have been through, but we can do what the Bible tells us to do-to pray for you and to love you.”
After Allard read a passage from Psalm 3, Steve Mann and his son Johnathon performed a song that Steve wrote about his cousin Billy Weber, who was killed in Vietnam.
After the song, Allard led those in attendance in prayer.
“Oh Lord, we thank you for the thousands of men and women who have accepted the call to serve their country in our Armed Forces,” she said. “For those who have departed, bless their souls and keep their memories alive with us so that we remember their contributions to our freedom. For those who remain with us, help us to always honor them and respect them and their courage and devotion to duty May we always have the courage to fight for freedom and dignity no matter how difficult the struggle. We ask in your name, Amen.”
