ELC Jazz Band to participate in state festival/contest

SPIRIT LAKE – The Estherville Lincoln Central High School Jazz Band, directed by Laura Giebler will participate in the Iowa High School Music Association State Jazz Band Festival/Contest on Monday, Jan. 23, performing at 7:50 p.m. There will be eight high school jazz bands performing from 4:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Spirit Lake Sami Bedell Center for the Performing Arts. Public is welcome to attend and hear some great jazz music. The ELC High School Jazz Band will perform the selections “Back Online” “Goodbye My Heart” and “Cafe Caliente.”

Other participating high school jazz bands will be from Emmetsburg, Harris-Lake Park, Okoboji, Sibley-Ocheyedan, South O’Brien, Spencer, and Spirit Lake. The jazz bands will be evaluated by three adjudicators on jazz band ensemble characteristics of tone quality, blend, rhythmic feel, interpretation, precision, musicianship, solo improvisation and ensemble balance. Following the judged portion of the performance, each band will have a 20-minute session with a guest clinician. Each band is rated according to Iowa High School Music Association guidelines receiving a rating of Division One-Superior, Division Two-Excellent, Division Three-Good, Division Four-Fair, Division Five-Poor, or choose to receive comments only.
