Looking for something new? Try hockey
While hockey and ice skating may be the activity of choice for many across the northern Iowa border in Minnesota, northern Iowans may not be aware that they can ice skate nearby in this state as well.
The Boji Bay Ice Arena, located in Spirit lake, has been in operation the past few seasons.
According to Estherville Noon Kiwanis President Brent Shatto, members of the Club had the privilege of observing the Youth Hockey League practices at the arena this past Monday.
Kiwanis members made a donation to the Youth Hockey League to purchase youth hockey equipment. With the donations, the league will purchase all everything needed to equip a hockey player.
Currently eight youth from the Estherville area are playing in the Youth Hockey League-five of them are from the Ussery family as five of their six children take part, according to Shatto.
The Boji Bay Ice Arena and the Youth Hockey League are entirely operated on donations and volunteers.
On Saturday, Feb 25, from 1:30-4 p.m., the Boji Bay Ice Arena and Youth Hockey League will have a “Try Hockey Free Day.” Youth can go to the arena and see if playing hockey is for them on that day. They also hold a ” Learn to Skate” and “Learn to Play Hockey” day usually held in October.
An “Open Skate” time is currently held from 7-9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday Nights unless there is a scheduled game. Call ahead or check the website at Boji Bay Ice Arena.
