Who is your hometown hero?

By Staff | Apr 3, 2017

It’s Spring Party time at the Estherville Hy-Vee. Sandy Berven said, “This is the time of year we clean, paint, stripe the parking lot, and otherwise spruce up the store.”

The theme this year is Hometown Heroes. Berven said, “We’re going to provide dinner at the monthly trainings to the Estherville Police Department, Estherville Fire Department, and the Gruver and Wallingford Departments for sure.”

To bring awareness to heroes throughout the community, Berven said the store is sponsoring an essay contest.

The prize: a $100 gift card to the winner.

In 500 words or fewer, writers are asked to answer the questions: 1. Who is your hometown hero, and 2. What makes the person(s) heroic?

Procrastination is to an entrant’s fall. The due date is April 11. Essays should be turned in to the Hy-Vee customer service desk, and must include the entrant’s name, address and phone number. There is no age restriction, but entrants and the heroes must live in Emmet County.

A panel of judges will read the essays and choose a winner, and make the announcement April 13.

Berven said, “We are excited to read about the heroes in our community.”
