The Judicial Nominating Commission for the 3A Judicial District met Wednesday and announced Thursday morning the names of two area attorneys sent to Governor Reynolds to appoint to the judicial vacancy upcoming with Judge David Lester’s retirement.

Early is an attorney with Fitzgibbons Law Office in Estherville. Lester, appointed in 1998, was also an attorney with Fitzgibbons before his judicial appointment. Early and John M. Sandy of Spirit Lake were nominated by the Commission after a day interviewing five candidates Wednesday.

Judicial District 3A includes Emmet County along with Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay Dickinson, Kossuth, Lyon, O’Brien, Osceola and Palo Alto Counties.

Gov. Reynolds has 30 days to appoint one of the nominees to be a district judge. District court judges typically hear a variety of cases including probate, felony criminal cases, dissolution of marriage, adoptions, disputes involving actions of state administrative agencies, juvenile cases and other matters.

The Estherville News will have more in Monday’s edition.
