Dr. Edwin L. Youmans

WEST CHESTER, Pa.–Edwin L. Youmans, 84, of West Chester, Pa., retired Dean and Professor Emeritus at West Chester University, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2008, at the Barclay Friends Home.

Dr. Youmans grew up in Estherville, where he graduated from Estherville High School in 1942. A year after graduation he entered the U.S. Navy where he completed the U.S. Navy Cadet Program and was graduated Ensign, designated naval aviator and assigned to a Navy fighter group.

Upon completing his military service, Dr. Youmans enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College where he received a bachelor's deree in physical education. He subsequently went on to earn both Master's and Doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Youmans, a lifelong educator, began his career teaching and coaching in high schools, first in Creston then Faribault, Minn. In 1960, he went to West Chester University to administer the newly established graduate program in its School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. While at West Chester University, Dr. Youmans coached track and field, taught both graduate and undergraduate level courses, and ultimately served as Dean of the School of Health and Physical Education.

Dr. Youmans married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Henrich, of Spencer, in 1943. They raised two daughters, Terry Ann Spadoni and Valerie Ann Odell. Dr. Youmans is also survived by four grandchildren; Katherine A. Kwiatkowski, Mark D. Kwiatkowski, Sarah M. Odell, and Samuel E. Odell. Doanations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
