Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at Armstrong Grove Cemetery in Armstrong.
She died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at The Longhouse resident home in Spencer.
Mary A. Long, daughter of Richard and Johanna (Beck) Metz, was born Sept. 17, 1916, in Swea City.
Her childhood years were spent in the Ringsted area where she attended school and graduated from the Ringsted High School in 1934. In April 1936 Mary was united in marriage to Floyd Long. Mary and her family lived and farmed in the northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota area for several years. Mary also modeled shoes, was a live-in cook, raised and prepared chickens and their eggs for sale, baked pies for Dairy Delight, and was employed for over 30 years as a housekeeper by a few beloved families in Estherville until her retirement in 1993. In 2002 Mary moved to Spencer and resided at Riverview Assisted Living/St. Luke’s Nursing Home and the Longhouse Resident Home.
Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville. She was a great cook and had a wonderful ‘green’ thumb, both indoors and out. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Going for coffee with long-time friends was an important part of her day. Mary’s gentle, caring, and sincere ways were felt by all that knew and loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dan Long and his wife Linda, of Harlingen, Texas, Margie Pitts and her husband Chuck, of Spencer, Bonnie Howard and her husband, Glenn, of Dolliver, and Tim Long of Dodge City, Kan.; nine grandchildren: James Long, Darin Long and his wife, Amanda, Billie Jo Nitchals and her husband, Chad, Lindsay Howard, Rodger Linn and his wife Kristy, Rodney Linn, David Isenhower and his wife, Michelle, Justin Long, and Jameson Thede; nine great-grandchildren: Steven, Holly, Brody, Brandon, Courtney, Caden, Aryn, Kyle and Cory; and four great-great grandchildren: Alexander, Tatiana, Jimi, and Jackson. She is also survived by one sister, Edna Foth, of Bancroft; one sister-in-law, Dorothy (Taylor) Dirksen, of Estherville; first cousins; many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding Mary in death were her parents; two brothers: Jim and Robert Metz; and one sister, Agnes Wilson and her husband, Ralph.
