William “Bill” Berven

Funeral services for William E. Berven, 78, of Estherville will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008 at Estherville Lutheran Church with Pastor Susan Stone officiating. Interment with military rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 will be at East Side Memorial Cemetery, Estherville. He died Friday, March 29, 2008, at Avera Holy Family Hospice in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-8 Monday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Home in Estherville.

William Edgar Berven, age 78, was born on a farm 3 miles north of Estherville, Sept. 24, 1929, to Anton & Laura (Martz) Berven.

He received his education in Estherville having attended high school and junior college.

Bill was a member of the Iowa National Guard and served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1951 to 1954 where he met his wife Wilma. They were married in May of 1954 and returned to the United States in August of that year.

On returning to Iowa, Bill rejoined the Iowa National Guard and received his Officers Commission in 1957. He was employed by Joyce Lumber Company and Well’s Dairy Company. Later in life he managed the V.F.W. Post #3388 Canteen for a number of years, upon retiring Bill was employed part-time at The Super Wash in Estherville.

He was the V.F.W. Institutional Representative to the Boy Scout Troop for 10 years. Bill was a member of the Estherville Lutheran Church, a Life member of the V.F.W. and held many offices both on a local and district level, the Military Order of the Cooties, the Hines Blind Rehabilitation Center Alumni, the Blind Veterans of America and the Horological Society of America.

Bill enjoyed traveling, woodworking. He built many clock cases and did some ‘old clock’ repair. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Left to cherish Bill’s memories are his wife, Wilma, daughter Monica Gillman and her husband, Michael and their children, Michael Lee and his daughter, Hunter and friend Amanda, Jonathon Lee of Rapid City, S.D. and Mark Gillman and friend, Nealy and their son, Kolton of Chariton; daughter, Betty Danner and her husband, Fred and their children, Cory Danner and his wife, Melissa and their children, Alivia and Josie; Nicholas Danner and his wife, Emily and their children Cole and Noah; Tara Hill and her husband, Andrew Hill and their children Kaitlyn and Alyssa, and Lori Danner and her special friend, Josh McClain (of Arnolds Park), of Estherville; son, Robert Berven and his wife, Deborah of Spencer and their children, Rochelle Gilmore and her husband, John Gilmore and son, Ethan of Sioux Rapids; Rebecca of Sioux Fall, S.D. and Angela and her children of Minneapolis Minn.; two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law all living in Germany, and many nieces, nephews and special friends.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Gary ‘Doris’ Stam of Estherville, Iowa and Margery Stinogel of Milford Iowa, two brothers-in-law, William Musser of Spencer and Max Rolicz of Germany .
