Merle “Gene” Wilson
ESTHERVILLE — Funeral services for Merle ‘Gene’ Wilson, 73, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Carol Johnson Miller officiating. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery.
He died Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
Merle “Gene” Wilson, the son of Aaron “Verle” and Mae (Longman) Wilson, was born March 21, 1935, in Estherville.
He received his education in Estherville schools.
In his early years, Gene worked at the Bowling Alley as a pin setter. Later he was employed at John Morrell Company in Estherville until his disability. On April 17, 1976, he was united in marriage to Melba (Hilliard) Wallace at the Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. The couple made their home on their acreage in the Ingham Lake area which was surrounded by property owned by the DNR and its wildlife. In the evenings, Gene enjoyed watching and taping Western movies.
Gene was a proud life-time member of NRA and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an enthusiastic square dancer and enjoyed driving around to see the nature and wildlife. He also took care of his asparagus and horseradish garden.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Melba, of Wallingford; step-children, Merle Wallace and his wife, Bonnie, Bonnie Gross and her husband, Daryl, Jerald Wallace and his wife, Elaine, Steve Wallace, and Mike Wallace, all of Spirit Lake, and Keith Wallace and his wife, Betsy, of Algona; 15 step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joyce Farquharson; brothers-in-law, Majel Hilliard and his wife, Gwen, Ben Seeger, and Silven Moench; several cousins; and many hunting and fishing friends with which he enjoyed many trips.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Betty; infant brother, John; sister Dorine; and two step-daughters-in-law, Cindy and Judy Wallace; brothers-in-law, Verlynn Hilliard, Dwight Hilliard and his wife, Esther, and Hugh Farquharson; and sisters-in-law, Thelma Moench, Ersel Seeger, and Velma Hilliard.
