She died Thursday, June 5, 2008, at Fairmont Medical Center Lutz Wing in Fairmont, Minn.
Marietta Pauline ‘Polly’ (Helgason) Diekman, the daughter of Edward and Mary (Jensen) Helgason, was born Feb. 25, 1907, in Seneca.
She received her education in Armstrong and graduated from Armstrong High School. She attended Iowa State College, Ames, to obtain a degree in home economics and teaching.
On March 14, 1941, Polly was united in marriage to August (Red) Diekman. The couple lived in Kalona, where she taught home economics for 41 of her 42 years of teaching. In 1955 they moved to Dunedin, Fla., along with Virgil and Viola Blomster, where Polly taught one year at Clearwater High School. The couple then moved to Armstrong and Polly was the librarian for over 20 years, retiring at age 90. In 1999, she moved to Fairmont to be closer to her sister Viola.
She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and the VFW Legion Auxiliary. For hobbies, she enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing bridge and painting dishes. She was known as ‘Aunt Polly’ to all and she seemed to remember everyone’s birthday and special occasions.
Left to cherish Polly’s memory are one sister, Viola Blomster, of Fairmont and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Lloyd Helgason and Lorenzo ‘Bud’ Helgason; and one sister, Ione Ahart. On-line condolences may be sent to www.henryolsonfuneral.com
