Alfred ‘Dick’ Hoppe Jr.

Funeral services for Alfred ‘Dick’ Hoppe Jr., 75, of Sheridan, Wyo., and formerly Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2008, at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Pastor Doug Burton officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.

He died Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Sheridan Hospital in Sheridan, Wyo.

Alfred Robert Hoppe Jr., the son of Alfred Frank and Ada (March) Hoppe Sr., was born Feb. 4, 1933, in St. Paul, Minn.

He received his elementary education in the St. Paul schools and high-school years in Baldwin, Wis. Dick served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Dick was united in marriage to Ellen Connor and they had three children, Toni, Robert, and Sis. For the majority of his life, Dick was employed as a butcher. He moved to Estherville and was employed at John Morrell and Company. Later he lived in the Amboy, Alpha, and Sherburn, Minn., areas. Later Dick was united in marriage to Sharon Simpson. He and Sharon had three children, Janeen, William, and Scott. He made a career of the military and was a mess sergeant at Camp Ripley for many years. Later he moved to the Gillette-Sheridan, Wyo., area to make his home.

Dick enjoyed his grandchildren and especially his little great-grandchildren. He enjoyed cooking and people coming to eat his food. He traveled to Alaska, to visit his daughter Sis, brother Virgil and to Arizona and Canada with son Bill. He enjoyed telling tales of farming, was an avid reader of “old time westerns” reading two or more a day and then re-reading the westerns.

Left to cherish Dick’s memory are his children, Alfred Robert Hoppe III and his wife, Mona, of Jesup, Ga., Antoinette (Toni) Ostendorf and her husband, Paul, of Estherville, Jeanette (Sis) Palmer and her husband, Glen, of Wright, Wyo., and William (Bill) Hoppe of Goodyear, Ariz.; stepson, David Crawmer, and his wife, Debbie, of Algona; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; brother, Virgil Hoppe, and his wife, Barbara, of Mellon, Wis.; and sister, Connie Vandenberg, and her husband, Arnold, of Rock Springs, Wyo.

Preceding Dick in death were one infant daughter, Janeen Hoppe; one son, Scott Hoppe; and his parents.
