Robert Charles Rice

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Memorial services for Robert Charles Rice, 69, of Arnold, Md., and formerly Estherville will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2008, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Annapolis, Md. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 25 at Barranco and Sons Funeral Home in Severna Park, Md.

He died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the University of Maryland Pulmonary Transplant ICU in Baltimore due to complications occurring after transplant surgery.

Robert Charles Rice was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Nevenville. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and his PhD from Iowa State University.

He taught, administered schools, and coached at all levels from elementary through high school. He served as interim superintendent of the District of Columbia Public Schools and in three other superintendencies in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools in Annapolis, Md., St. Charles Parish Public Schools in Luling, La., and Estherville Community Schools in Estherville. He worked for the Maryland State Department of Education and the Maryland State Board of Education. Most recently he was employed by the District of Columbia Public schools as special assistant to the superintendent.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy Rice; former wife, Susannah Rice, Queen Anne, Md.; son, Dr. Robert Todd Rice and wife, Robin; daughter, Stephanie Rice Weaver and husband, Eric, Greensboro, N.C.; stepchildren, Mark Fleming and Rachael Fleming, both of Arnold, Md.; grandchildren, Hayden Rice, Robert Connor Rice, and Nathan Rice, all of Queen Anne, Md., and Noah Weaver, Jonathan Weaver, and Susannah Weaver, all of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers, Richard Rice, Johnson, and Ronald Rice, Des Moines; and the Falck family.
