She was born on May 27, 1935, in Estherville, to John and Bernice (Symens) Lyman. Ann was raised in Estherville and graduated from Estherville High School in 1953. She was vice-president of her class and graduated cum laude and was a member of the cheerleading squad. She enjoyed many summers at their cottage on Big Spirit Lake.

She was also a member of the board of directors of the Janesville YWCA and was active in its programs. For several years, she served as a school crossing guard. After moving to Spirit Lake, Ann continued her quilting, displaying her crafts at the Art in the Park show in Okoboji.

Ann is survived by her husband, David Murphy, of Spirit Lake; her three children, Dave Drew Murphy of San Diego, Diane Murphy, and her partner, Amy Schwartz, of Milwaukee, and Susan Murphy-Holst, and her husband, Bruce, of Sarasota; and her grandchildren, Lizzy, Maddy, Leah, and Ian.
