Harvey C. Mathias
ST. JAMES, Minn. – Funeral services for Harvey C. Mathias, 81, of St. James, Minn., and formerly of Estherville will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church in St. James with the Rev. Don Crissinger-Clark officiating. Visitation will be 3:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville and 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in St. James. Interment will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at East Side Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.
He died Friday, July 18, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after an extended hospitalization.
Harvey Conrad Mathias, the son of Henry and Ruth (Talbott) Mathias, was born March 4, 1927, in Kit Carson County, Colo.
His family moved back to the St. James area (South Branch) where they lived on a family farm. Harvey was confirmed in 1943 at St. Paul’s Lutheran in St. James. He received his education in District 14 School and received a veteran’s diploma in later years. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in Guam.
On April 28, 1948, he was united in marriage to Delores Gustafson in St. James. The couple moved to the Estherville area in 1950, where they farmed until 1992, when they retired to Estherville. Delores died Aug. 13, 1995. On Oct. 18, 1997, he was united in marriage to Lila Lorenz and moved to St. James where they presently lived.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Estherville where he had served as an elder and trustee. In 1997, Harvey joined the First Presbyterian Church in St. James where he was the “unofficial greeter” each Sunday morning. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3388 in Estherville. While living in the Estherville area Harvey served in various organizations such as Emmet County Township Boards, Soil Conservation, Fair Board, Extension Council and DEK Rural Cooperative.
Left to cherish Harvey’s memory are his wife, Lila, of St. James; and his children, Diane Mathias of Wanamingo, Minn., and Kurt Mathias and his wife, Brenda, of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; Also surviving are his stepchildren, Judy Benzel and Roger, David and Mike Lorenz; brother, Arnold of Sunburg, Minn.; sister, Mina Koeltzow, of Golden, Colo.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding Harvey in death were his first wife; parents; brother, Glenn, and sister, Lela Thomson, both of Idaho.
