Alethea Marie Schroeder
BROOKINGS, S.D. – Funeral services for Alethea Marie Schroeder, 87, of Brookings, S.D., will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings with Rev. Terry Naasz officiating.Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Interment will be 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.
She died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Brookview Manor in Brookings.
Alethea Marie Francis DeSalles Shinnick was born on April 3, 1921, in Codington County, S.D., the daughter of Fredrick and Mary Ann (Culhane) Shinnick.
Alethea received her education seven and a half years in Waverly, S.D., and finished eighth grade in a country school in Brookings and graduated from the Brookings High School in 1938. After receiving her education, she was employed with Montgomery Ward in Brookings and later at the Montgomery Ward Store in Sioux Falls, S.D. She lived in Ivanhoe, Minn., until after World War II ended. She was united in marriage to Harvey Schroeder on June 20, 1946, at the Lutheran Church in Aurora, S.D. Alethea worked in veterans hospitals, nursing homes and for senior citizens in South Dakota.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings and served as an officer of Mary Martha Circle. Alethea was a member of the 8 & 40 Group and served as Chapeau of Salon in Brookings. She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #74 and served as president of the local Auxiliary #74 and also served as president of the Past Presidents of the American Legion. She was also an active member of many organizations including leader for the Boy Scouts, the Hospital Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary #2118, where she held many offices including president. She served as president of the VFW Auxiliary, past president for two years and in 1972, she was a National ‘Aid To Camp’ at the National Convention. She especially enjoyed quilting, genealogy, music, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.
Alethea is survived by two sons, Klare Schroeder and his wife, Katie; Gary Schroeder and his wife, Theresa, all of Rapid City, S.D.; two daughters, Nanette Schroeder of Brookings, S.D., and Rebecca Gab-Schroeder of Rapid City, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Wakeman of Brookings, S.D., and Shirley Petersen and her husband, Darrell, of Ivanhoe, Minn.; a son-in-law, Tom Bortvit, of Branson, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Betty Shinnick, of Rapid City, S.D., and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, who died on Dec. 7, 2007; one daughter, Katherine Bortvit; one grandson, Matthew Gab; two brothers, John and Lloyd Shinnick; a brother-in-law, Harvey Wakeman and a sister-in-law, Virginia Shinnick.
