Mildred Sophia (Bonstead) Jacobson, the daughter of Carl S. and Anna Marie (Petersen) Bonstead, was born Sept. 26, 1909, in Lost Island Township, Palo Alto County.

She received her education in the country schools in Lost Island Township and Dana College in Blair, Neb.

On July 1, 1930, Mildred was united in marriage to Vernie Lee Jacobson at St. Paul’s Danish Lutheran Church in Graettinger. Following their marriage the couple moved to a farm two and a half miles west of Graettinger where they raised their family, farmed and raised dairy cattle.

Mildred was active in the operation of the farm with Vernie and worked along side him milking cows and doing chores. Known for her welcoming smile and hospitality, Mildred loved sewing, gardening, cooking and baking. She especially enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for birthdays and weddings for her family. Mildred’s family was the most important part of her life and she was always interested in what they were doing. Her hobbies included feeding the birds and she especially enjoyed the hummingbird; going to auctions with Vernie and buying and refinishing antique furniture; they enjoyed going to their cabin on Lost Island Lake and spending time there and fishing. In the winter months they enjoyed ice fishing together.

The couple retired in 1972 and moved into Wallingford. Vernie died Aug. 30, 2001 and Mildred moved to Estherville where she lived at Friendship Terrace Apartments. While living there Mildred took great pleasure in her friends and coffee parties there. For the last several months due to failing health, Mildred has been a resident of the Good Samaritan Society.

Mildred was a member of Wallingford Lutheran Church.
