Dale W. Reed

ESTHERVILLE – Funeral services for Dale W. Reed, 95, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008 at Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville with Pastor Cody Crigger, officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Gardens, Spirit Lake with Pastor Joel Jorgensen officiating. He died on Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Estherville.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., today at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

Dale Walter Reed the son of Walter and Effie (Swett) Reed was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Blue Springs, Neb.

Dale grew up on a farm near Blue Springs, Neb. and received his education in the rural country schools in the Ellis and Beatrice area. From a young age Dale had a love of horses, farming and cattle.

On Aug. 25, 1935, Dale was united in marriage to Ruth E. Miller in a double wedding ceremony with Dale’s sister Myrle Reed and Ruth’s brother, Orval Miller at Dale’s parents farm home in Gage County, Nebraska. The couple came to Kossuth County on their honeymoon and made their home and farmed in the Bancroft and Swea City, Iowa areas. The couple moved to rural Spirit Lake in 1950 where they farmed until 1967 when they moved to their farm north of Estherville. Dale also worked for Roy Rohlin in road construction. He was a longtime member of Farm Bureau and did many years of R.S.V.P. volunteer work. Dale was an active member of Grandview Baptist Church until he moved into Good Samaritan Center in November of 2004.

Grandpa Reed was loved dearly by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 73 years, Ruth; daughter, Nancy R. Nelsen and her husband, Tom of Estherville; grandchildren, Mark Nelsen and his wife Denise and their children, Zacharie; Emilie and Alissa of LaRochelle, France; Joy Meinders and her husband, Chris and their children, Nathan and Abby of Grimes; Londa Crigger and her husband, Cody and their children, Cloe, Carson and McClain of West Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Donna Reed of Colorado and granddaughters, Brandi (Reed) Weisman and Grace (Reed) Paten of Texas and Jennifer Reed of Colorado; brothers, Lester Reed of Kansas; Gerald Reed of Nebraska and sister, Myrle Miller of Swea City and sister-in-law, Myrtle Miller of Beatrice, Neb.

Dale has been preceded in death by his parents; son, Gary and sisters, Irene Reed and Doris Jantzen.
