ESTHERVILLE – Funeral services for Merlyn L. Wee, 86, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Pastor Doug Burton officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.

He died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Rosewood manor Nursing Home in Estherville.

Merlyn Lester Wee, the son of John and Ethel (Misener) Wee, was born May 7, 1922, in Estherville.

He received his education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School. Merlyn served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Navy pilot. He served as a flight instructor at Pensacola, Fla., and was Air Craft Carrier Certified.

On Dec. 7, 1944, Merlyn was united in marriage to Arlene Walz in Chicago. The couple made their home in Estherville and Merlyn was employed with John Morrell Co. for 27 years. Arlene died Aug. 28, 2000.

Merlyn was an active member and was instrumental in the operation of the VFW Post 3388 for 40 years. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 91. He also served as a fireman for 27 years and was past president of the John Morrell Union for 13 years. For hobbies, he enjoyed gardening, yard work, fishing and fixing things.

Left to cherish Merlyn’s memory are his children, Larry Wee and his wife, Lori, of Omaha, Neb., Jim Wee and his wife, Linda, of Parkersburg, William Wee of Sheldon and Tom Wee of Sioux Center; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Gerald Wee and his wife, Eunice, of Wallingford and Robert Wee and his wife, Joyce, of Pollock Pines, Calif.; and sister, Sherry Nauss, and her husband, Jerry, of Estherville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son Kenneth and two sisters, Ruth and Vernice.
