ESTHERVILLE – Funeral services for Joanne M. Schroeder, 70, of Estherville will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2009, at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville with Pastor Doug Burton officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

She died Monday, June 29, 2009, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville.

Joanne Margaret (Dirksen) Schroeder, the daughter of Ole and Evelyn (Pekarek) Dirksen, was born on Aug. 8, 1938, in Albert City.

The family moved to Spencer in 1939. Joanne attended Lincoln grade school and graduated from Spencer High School in 1956.

On April 14, 1957, she was united in marriage to Harry Christian. The couple lived on a farm north and then east of Spencer. Joanne also worked for Spencer Packing Company for several years and helped with $126her husband’s farm. One daughter, Susan Elizabeth, and a stillborn daughter were born to this union.

In 1973, Joanne and Sue moved to the Brainerd, Minn. area. Joanne married W. Edward Stukey and they farmed and raised beef cattle. After their divorce in 1984, Joanne moved back to Spencer to care for her ailing parents. Also during this time she held various sales positions and started her own business color draping and selling makeup.

She met her present husband, Harvey, and they drove semi-truck as a team. Joanne and Harvey were united in marriage on Aug. 29, 1987. After being a homemaker for several years, Joanne went to work part-time at the ALCO Store in Estherville. She enjoyed working with all her co-workers and meeting new people.

For hobbies, she enjoyed bowling, gardening, flowers, and was an avid golfer where she won many trophies. At one time she had her own bowling team, was vice-president of her league, and served on the board of directors for the city association.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Estherville. She enjoyed her family and friends and liked doing special things for them. She was a good cook and loved to bake and her specialty was angel food cake made from scratch. Over the years she made many, many cakes and gave them away.

Left to cherish Joanne’s memory are her husband, Harvey, of Estherville; daughters, Susan (Bob) Katula of Stillwater, Minn., Lorri (Richard) Beaver of Estherville and Susan (Dan) Crowley of Le Mars; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Ella) Dirksen of Des Moines and many nieces, aunts, uncles, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister, one son, Todd, and an infant daughter.
