FAIRMONT, Minn. – Services for Leonard L. Howell, 92, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 1, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 30 at the Lakeview Funeral Home in Fairmont and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Fairview Memorial Park in Fairmont with full military honors by the Lee C. Prentice American Legion Post 36 and Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222.
Leonard passed away Saturday morning, June 26, 2010, at the St. Luke’s Lutheran Care Center in Blue Earth, Minn.
Leonard Levern Howell was born on Jan. 22, 1918, in Dedham, son of Claude and Ola (Huntley) Howell. Leonard received his education in Maple Hill, Graettinger and Wallingford. Leonard helped his dad on the family farm until he enlisted in the United States Army on June 10, 1942. He did his training in Virginia, Florida, Tennessee and Arizona before being sent to France to fight in World War II. Leonard was wounded in action on Sept. 2, 1944. He was awarded the Purple Heart before coming home and receiving an Honorable Discharge on April 24, 1945.
On May 29, 1946, Leonard was united in marriage to Carol McMurtry in Mankato, Minn. The couple resided in Wallingford for nine years before moving to a farm near Ceylon, Minn. They lived there until they retired in 1978, when they moved to Fairmont. The couple shared 64 years together.
Leonard was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Fairmont. He was also a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Post 36, Martin County V.F.W. Post 1222 and the Polka Lovers Club of America. During their spare time, Leonard and Carol loved going dancing together. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed fishing with his family.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Carol Howell, of Fairmont, Minn.; six children, Nancy Schaefer and her husband, Ray, of Forsyth, Mont., Richard Howell and his wife, Diane, of Welcome, Minn., Larry Howell and his wife, Vicki, of Spirit Lake, Linda Fritz and her husband, Dennis, of Hendersonville, Tenn., Mary Detert of Fairmont, Minn. and Debra Laue and her husband, Rod, of Fairmont, Minn.; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Hansel of Ceylon, Minn. and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents, Claude and Ola Howell, Leonard was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rhonda Howell; grandson, Eric Fritz; son-in-law, Earl Detert and half brother, Howard Hansel.
