WALLINFORD – Funeral services for Gary Lee Nissen, 67, of Wallingford will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 29 at Wallingford Lutheran Church with Pastor Charles Gilbert officiating. Interment, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville, will be at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery, Wallingford. He died Sunday, July 25, 2010, at Avera Holy Family Health in Estherville.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 28, at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville.

Gary Lee Nissen, the son of Ernest and Maxine (Bales) Nissen, was born March 22, 1943, on a farm in rural Graettinger.

He received his education in the Graettinger schools, graduating from Graettinger High School. Following his graduation Gary served in the United States Navy. Upon his honorable discharge from military service he returned to the Graettinger area where he was employed driving truck and working for a farmer. Later he went to work for Estherville Sand and Gravel.

On July 13, 1973, Gary was united in marriage to Nancy Faye Mitchell in Sioux Falls, S.D. The couple made their home in Estherville for a year and then moved to Wallingford, Ia., to permanently make their home and raise their family. Gary was employed with Estherville Sand and Gravel until the mid 1990s when he went to work for Valley Contracting where he worked until the time of his death. In his leisure time he enjoyed riding his motorcycle and fishing and taking fishing trips to Pierre, S.D. He also enjoyed hunting, especially pheasant and deer hunting. His greatest pleasure in life was spending time with his family.

He was a member of Wallingford Lutheran Church.

Left to cherish Gary’s memory are his wife, Nancy of Wallingford; his children, Justin Nissen and his wife, Nora of Estherville; Amy Teepe and her husband, Lonnie of Laurens; Sheila Nissen of Wallingford; Lacy Teepe and her husband, Wade of Graettinger; Darren Nissen of Topeka, Kan.; Shelly Nissen of Topeka; Travis Nissen of North Carolina; 13 grandchildren; brothers, Eugene Nissen and his wife, Margaret of Pacific Junction; Ronald Nissen and his wife, Mary of Graettinger; Dennis Nissen and his wife, Barb of Sioux Falls, S.D.; half-brother, Bob Vanderhoff of Spencer; and half-sister, Marie Reeves of Graettinger.

Preceding Gary in death were a son, Adam; his parents; a brother, Melvin; two sisters, Delores and Virginia; half-sister, Vera McGlauklin; and half-brothers, Lyle Anderson and Roy Nissen.
