Roy A. Danielson
ESTHERVILLE – Funeral services for Roy A. Danielson, 93, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2010, at United Methodist Church in Estherville with Pastor Lynn Elrod officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Estherville with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.
He departed this life at the Good Samaritan Center in Estherville on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at the age of 93 years, three months and 21 days.
Roy A. Danielson, the son of Albert and Anna (Hallstrom) Danielson, was born April 7, 1917, in San Francisco, Calif.
Roy attended school in Walnut Creek and Saranap, Calif. After he graduated, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed at Hawthorne, Nev. in the Mounted Marines from 1935-1939. Following his enlistment, he entered the work force doing construction work until 1941 at the start of World War II when he was called back into the U.S. Marine Corps. He was shipped overseas and was involved in several battles including Guadalcanal and other areas in the South Pacific. During his tour, while awaiting a mission to Saipan, and aboard a landing craft at Pearl Harbor on May 21, 1944, there was an explosion aboard his ship and Roy was instrumental in the rescue of his fellow Marines for which he suffered serious injuries and spent several months in hospitals in Hawaii and Washington. For his heroism, he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps medal. After his recovery, he was transferred to Camp Pendleton, Calif., and it was there that he met a fellow Marine, Bette Huntsinger, and they were married on Aug. 26, 1945 in Yuma, Arizona.
Roy was medically discharged in 1945, and he and Bette moved back to her hometown, Estherville, Iowa. Roy worked as a mechanic for Rhodes Motors, Sioux Valley Fishline Co. as a machinist and lastly he was a welder for John Morrell & Co. for more than 20 years.
In earlier years, he enjoyed fishing with his family. Roy thoroughly enjoyed golfing and was a long-time member of the Estherville Golf and Country Club and continued golfing with a senior golfing league after his retirement. In his retirement he enjoyed golfing in Florida during their winter trips. He was a lifetime member of the Estherville VFW and a lifetime member of DAV (Disabled American Veterans). He was also a member of the Estherville United Methodist Church.
Roy is survived by his three children, daughter, Judy Taylor, and her husband, Dick, of Milford; two sons, Steve Danielson and his wife, Peggy, of Estherville and Tim Danielson and his wife, Nancy, of Wallingford. Also surviving are grandchildren, Jason Danielson and his wife, Tasha; Amber Blume and her husband, Matt; Jessica Nail and her husband, Justin; Amy Daws and her husband, Kevin, and Abby Danielson and her fianc, Ryan Wheeler. In addition there are six great-grandchildren, Logan, Kara, Mattie, Breanna, Evan and Eli. Roy is also survived by one niece, Sonia Monlux, of Chico, Calif.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Bette; parents and two brothers, Carl and Swen Danielson.
