Melba Hoien

ESTHERVILLE – Funeral services for Melba Hoien, 89, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2011, at First Christian Church in Estherville with Pastor Doug Burton officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at East Side Cemetery in Estherville.

She died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Melba (Foster) Hoien, the daughter of Tom and Vera (Dameron) Foster, was born May 18, 1921, in Galesburg, Ill. She received her education in the Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School in 1939.

On April 24, 1942, she was united to Bruce Hoien in Estherville. After their marriage, the couple made their home in Estherville. Bruce passed away Jan. 29, 1994. Melba enjoyed volunteering and doing crafts.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Estherville.

Left to cherish Melba’s memory are her children, Nancy Beck of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kathy Sawatzky and her husband, Don, of Janesville, Wis., Patricia Dalen and her husband, Duane, of Oreana, Ill. and Jim Hoien and his wife, Christine, of Lees Summit, Mo.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding Melba in death were her parents; son, Steven; three brothers, Jack, Rodney and Bob and grandson, Andrew.
