Fern D. Dalen
GRAETTINGER – Funeral services for Fern D. Dalen, 87, of Graettinger will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Graettinger with Pastor Christine Lang officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery in Graettinger.
She died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at the North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.
Fern Delores (Tonneson) Dalen, the daughter of Oscar and Lucille (Loch) Tonneson, was born April 22, 1923, in Dwight, N.D.
Fern was baptized in North Dakota and was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1940. Fern worked as a bookkeeper for a time and later as a telephone operator for three years.
On Oct. 14, 1944, she was united in marriage to Morris Dalen in Fairmont, Minn. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Graettinger area for over 60 years. Morris passed away Jan. 30, 2006.
Fern was a active member of the Bethel Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of ELCW. She loved farm living, raising their six children, gardening, flowers, sewing, cooking and music.
Left to cherish Fern’s memory are her children, Jim Dalen and his wife, Jane, of Omaha, Neb., Richard Dalen and his wife, Kathryn, of Estherville, Maureen Sandberg and her husband, Duane, of Graettinger, Duane Dalen and his wife, Pat, of Oreana, Ill., Darryl Dalen of Andover, Minn. and Ruth Thill and her husband, Todd, of Britt; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Robert Tonneson as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; grandson, Patrick Dalen; daughter-in-law, Patricia Dalen; brother, Howard and nephew, Roger.
