ESTHERVILLE – Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald Sawyer, 78, of Estherville will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in estherville with Father Brian Hughes as Celebrant and Father Albert Grendler as Homilist. Visitation will be from 9:45 a.m.until the time of the service at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday only. Rosary Service will at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Military honors will be held by VFW Post 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville.
He died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Gerald F. Sawyer (Jerry), the son of Marvin and Gladys (Bjornson) Sawyer, was born on the family farm Aug. 13, 1932, in Livermore.
He graduated from Livermore High School. Jerry served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He received his teaching degree at Wayne State College.
Jerry taught middle school mathematics for over 30 years. While he was teaching he coached basketball and football. In the summer months Jerry was a hail insurance adjuster. Jerry enjoyed all sports and was an umpire and referee. He also enjoyed horse racing, the stock market and golf. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Estherville.
Left to cherish Gerald’s memory are his children, Bryan Sawyer of Houston, Texas, Ann Satterlee of Oklahoma City, Okla. and Kari Sawyer of Lincoln, Neb.; two grandchildren, Tristan Satterlee and Trevor Satterlee; siblings, Rich Sawyer and his wife, Kay, of Renwick, Tom Sawyer and his wife, Jeanne, of Branson, Mo., Ken Sawyer and his wife, Sharon, of Humboldt, Virginia Baugous and her husband, Charles, of Ankeny and Beverly Schmitt of Sarasota, Fla. and sisters-in-law, Barb Sawyer of Humboldt and Janet Sawyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Marvin, Jr. and Merlyn and sister, Patricia.
