WALLINGFORD – Funeral services for Helen Nielsen, 100, of Estherville were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, at Wallingford Lutheran Church with Pastor Christine Lang officiating. Interment was at Wallingford Lutheran Cemetery.
She died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
Helen Clarice (Jorstad) Nielsen, the daughter of Bernt and Isabelle (Osher) Jorstad, was born Oct. 14, 1913, in Hammond, Wis.
She graduated from River Forks, Wis. High School. Helen also attended Waldorf College for one year and River Falls State Teacher’s College for two years, obtaining her teaching certificate. She taught school for two years.
In 1945, Helen was united in marriage to Thorvald Nielsen. The couple made their home and raised their family in the Wallingford, area. Helen was employed as postmaster at the Wallingford Post Office for 30 years. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading and quilting. Thorvald passed away in 1977.
She was a member of Wallingford Lutheran Church where she was active in church circle.
Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her children, Nathalie Anderson and her husband, Maurice, of Wallingford, Richard Nielsen of Minneapolis and Beverly Brix and her husband, Larry of Wallingford; four grandchildren, Jamie Anderson of Wallingford, Tina McCorkell and her husband, Jon, of Ceylon, Minn., Matt Brix of Mallard and Sondra Brix of Wallingford and four great-grandchildren, Rod Fuller and Callie, Michael and Morgan McCorkell.
Preceding Helen in death were her husband; parents; two brothers, Burt and Otis; six sisters, Mildred Refsell, Mabel Jorstad, Eva Clausen, Elsie Gunderson, Stella Owens, Nina Jorstad and an infant sister, Clara.
