Robert L. Simon
ESTHERVILLE – Funeral services for Robert L. Simon, 89, of Spirit Lake and formerly Dolliver, were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at Grandview Baptist Church in Estherville with the Pastor Joel Jorgenson officiating. Visitation was 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment was at Palestine Lutheran Cemetery in Dolliver.
He died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at Keelson Harbor in Spirit Lake.
Robert L. Simon, the son of Fred and Mabel (Schley) Simon, was born March 7, 1924, on a farm near Dolliver.
He received his education in the Dolliver Schools. He then attended Morningside College and later the University of Iowa. Robert served in United States Army Air Force during World War II, receiving many medals and honors including the Purple Heart.
On May 13, 1945 he was united in marriage to Doris Benton in Armstrong. Robert taught high school for three years in Melbourne before moving back to farm in 1951. He farmed in the Dolliver area for many years, retiring in 2005. Doris passed away in March of 2004. Robert moved to Fairmont, Minn. in 1998 and then lived in Spirit Lake from 2005 until 2013. On Dec. 6, 2005, he was united in marriage to Velma Olney Stewart. Velma passed away Nov. 3, 2013.
Robert was a past member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ceylon, Minn. and then attended St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Spirit Lake.
Left to cherish Robert’s life are his two sons, Greg Simon of Estherville and special friend, Ms. Reggie Kelly of Aurelia, and Robert (Bonnie) Simon, Jr. of Dolliver; three grandchildren, Joshua (Heather) Simon and Elizabeth and Michael Simon; three great-grandchildren, Tristan, Landen and Adilee Simon; step-children, Greg “Skip” (Jan) Olney of St. Petersburg, Fla., Donna Olney (John) “Ace” Passmore of Sugarland, Texas, Ron (Chris) Olney of Eden Prairie, Minn. and Sue Olney Beck of St. Petersburg, Fla.; siblings, John (Faith) Simon of Sacramento, Calif. and Mrs. Alice (Paul) Neppel of Spirit Lake; and sister-in-law, Evie Simon of Estherville. Robert has been preceded in death by his parents; both wives, Doris and Velma and two brothers, Jim and Fred Jr.
