Joseph Salyers Dec. 7, 1931 – Jan. 7, 2017
Joseph Salyers passed away on January 7, 2017 in his home on Big Sur, California. Joe was born in Estherville on December 7, 1931 to Maurice and Elizabeth Salyers. Maurice was an electrician, also a member of many fraternal organizations, and Elizabeth was a long-term bookkeeper for the Gardston Hotel. Joe’s grandfather, Isaac Salyers was a renowned building contractor in Estherville who built many Estherville homes and downtown buildings, including the Estherville Post Office.
Joe attended Estherville schools, graduating from high school in 1950. He was an outstanding student and won awards for his performance in acting in a play “High Window”. He excelled in sports; was chosen as All Conference football halfback. He graduated from Drake University in Des Moines and Catholic University in Washington, DC with a Master’s Degree in Theater. He had an exceptional career in theater management, serving as General Manager at major locations including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Hollywood Bowl. He was also employed by the U.S. State Department in their cultural exchange programs, managing individual groups on foreign tours.
He retired to a 10-acre mountain retreat in Partington Canyon on the Big Sur, California. He lived an idyllic life. Joe pursued many options, including a mail order business of selling redwood tree seedlings. Joe was a practicing Buddhist and was associated with the Manjushri Dharma Center in Pacific Grove, CA.
He will be remembered by many for his wonderful friendship, his professional accomplishments and his peaceful, quiet adherence to his Buddhist faith.
