Sheryl Marie Dykes Dec. 15, 1956 – July 27, 2017
Sheryl Marie Dykes, age 60, of Yankton, S.D., died Thursday, July 27, 2017, at Avera Majestic Bluffs Hospice House in Yankton after a lengthy battle with cancer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2017, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Larry Regynski officiating. A committal service will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2017, in the Holy Angels Mausoleum at Resurrection Cemetery in Omaha, Nebraska. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, July 31, 2017, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 6:45 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m.
Sheryl Marie Dykes was born Dec. 15, 1956, in Estherville to Merrill and Cleora (Heinrichs) Hanson. She attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School and graduated from Estherville High School in 1975. Sheryl attended Fashion Merchandising School in Omaha, Neb., graduating in 1976. Sheryl began working for Salkin and Linoff Company as a Retail Store Director and managed several store locations in Iowa. She developed a real flair for merchandising and salesmanship. Sheryl’s stores were fun for customers and employees while becoming highly profitable. She also became a Merchandise designer for Younkers Department Stores.
Sheryl married Bradley Dykes May 11, 1985, at St. Patrick’s Church in Estherville. She continued her store design work but also became a partner in helping Brad improve the Hy-Vee stores that he managed by creating and hanging signage, building displays and decorating. She was in integral part of decorating the stores for the holidays, especially Christmas. During their time in Worthington, Minn., Brad and Sheryl welcomed Erin into the family in November 1987. In Sioux Center, Evan joined the family in May of 1990. Later in the year of 1990 the family moved to Yankton, S.D.
In Yankton, Sheryl was active, chaired and volunteered for Friends of Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart Bazaar, Yankton Athletic Boosters Club and Yankton Swim Team. She particularly enjoyed being a member of PEO AS and Laura Ingalls Wilder Questers Organizations.
Sheryl was passionate about design and dcor. She especially loved decorating her home for Christmas and was known for having Christmas trees in every room of the house. Her most recent project was designing and remodeling the family beach home in Spirit Lake. It was featured in Okoboji Magazine.
Sheryl also had a deep passion for her Catholic faith and the Rosary. She was a member of the Yankton Family Radio Rosary Board. Best known for her determination, she was determined to practice her faith, love her family and friends, work hard and have fun. She fought her illness to the bitter end while never giving up or losing faith.
Sheryl is survived by her husband, Brad, Yankton; daughter, Erin (Tanner) Smith of Omaha, Neb.; son, Evan of Omaha, Neb.; father, Merrill Hanson of Estherville; brother and two sisters, Steve (Juliet) Hanson of Warrensburg, Mo, Laura (Joel) Stevens, Swea City, and Gayle (Rick) Johnson of Spencer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Brent (Mary) Dykes of Omaha, Neb., Brenda (Wayne) Jacobson of Cedar Falls; and nieces and nephews on both the Hanson and Dykes families.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Cleora (Heinrichs) Hanson and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
