To the EDN:
You may have heard that March is American Red Cross Month. As one of the nation’s best known humanitarian organizations, the Red Cross has been at the forefront of helping Americans prevent, prepare for and respond to large and small disasters for 127 years. Families and communities depend on the Red Cross in times of need; yet the Red Cross depends on the support of the American people to help sustain the foundation.
Each year during the month of March we formally recognize the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross and its essential humanitarian role in our community and the role of the chapter to making all of northwest Iowa a better and safer place. This year we focus on the spirit of the volunteers, donors and partners who support the Red Cross mission of humanitarianism.
For more than 90 years, the Red Cross in the Iowa Great Lakes area has relied on the everyday heroes who donate time, blood or money; heroes who help coordinate blood drives, heroes who instruct lifesaving skills such as CPR and water safety; heroes who respond to disaster and offer comfort to those affected. The Iowa Great Lakes Chapter is one of more than 700 chapters across the country which tirelessly serve their community.
In the past year alone, the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter responded to 10 local emergencies, assisted several military families and trained employees and citizens in lifesaving skills such as CPR and first aid. Red Cross volunteers are the core of the Red Cross, donating their time and energy to selflessly serve those in need; demonstrating the compassion and generosity for which Americans are known.
The Red Cross is the organization in the community that many rely on for help, comfort, advice and compassion. On behalf of the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter, I thank you for any donation you can make to help us continue our service to those in northwest Iowa.
Thank you for your support.

To the EDN:
The amount of positive support for the Spirit Lake boys basketball team the entire season has been very much appreciated. The additional out pouring of well wishes, congratulations and deeds by the entire community during the tournament run has been overwhelming.
We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of one of the greatest teams Spirit Lake boys basketball has ever seen. Much like the team, no individual contribution from the public or media has more importance than the next, so we’d like to thank everyone collectively.
The crowd support by students and fans at the games has been wonderful and has helped bring home several victories. Comments to the team from past players, teachers and coaches as well as all the fans on the street have been appreciated.
We thank all the business community for their sponsorships and contributions.
The media coverage by KUOO, Lakes TV, The Dickinson County News, the Lakes News Shopper and the Estherville Daily News has been outstanding.
Thanks to the entire coaching team and the teachers and staff at the school.
It was team effort on the court all year and the entire community has been a very important part of that team. Thank you.
