Indians turn in first round at state
MARSHALLTOWN — In its first state appearance at the Class 3A girls state golf meet, Spirit Lake is tied for fourth in the team standings after the first day of play on Tuesday.
The Indians carded a 418, the same as Clear Lake, at the Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown.
Washington leads the field by 40 strokes with a 367. Ballard is a distance second with 407 followed by MOC-Floyd Valley with 408 and Knoxville with 414.
Vinton-Shellsburg is seventh with 431 followed by Crestwood with 451.
Knoxville’s Kaurie Kincaid leads the field by five strokes in the individual standings as she shot an 80.
For Spirit Lake, Nikki Nielsen is tied for 15th overall with her first round of 98.
Ashley Nielsen shot a 101 to tie for 18th.
Rounding out Spirit Lake’s counting scores, Maureen Owens shot a 109 and Katie Hansen had a 110.
Non-counting scores were a 113 by Emily Ayres and a 118 by Regan Sieperda.
The Lakes Conference’s other individual qualifier, Spencer’s Emily Holck, shot a 92 to tie for seventh overall.
