If you were to take a poll, you would probably find that nearly everyone has canceled or cut back on vacation plans this summer due to gas prices.
While gas prices have eased off a bit, decreased consumer demand is actually the reason. With everyone staying home, it’s only natural that prices would come down.
And that’s a good thing.
That doesn’t mean, though, that you can’t vacation locally.
Within a few, short miles, there are dozens of lakes and beaches to enjoy. In fact, higher gas prices are attributed with increasing visits to Emmet County parks this summer. The same goes for Fort Defiance State Park where camping and day visitors are both seeing a strong upswing.
You can do just about anything locally that you want to on a long trip. Why, there’s Arnolds Park amusement park just a few miles away along with the beaches on West and East Okoboji. You’ll find great beaches at the parks in Emmet County too, along with lots of fishing and swimming and boating.
Both the East and West Des Moines have excellent canoeing and kayaking. What a great way to see wildlife in its natural setting – away from people and city life. You’d swear that you were hundreds of miles away from civilization.
At Fort Defiance, it’s practically a different world once you enter School Section Creek Valley. The water is flowing well now, and it makes for a picturesque and enjoyable outing as you wander the trails along the creek.
And once you set up a tent or your camper in one of our local parks, you leave all those cares about gas prices behind. As you make that great camp breakfast in the morning or ponder on the stars at night … now that’s a vacation!
If you haven’t taken your vacation yet this summer, there’s still time.
And what a great place we have to take one.
