Let the celebrating begin!

It is a three-day weekend, the last time to really celebrate the summer with family and friends as Labor Day unofficially brings summer fun in the sun to a close.

We would like to remind everyone to use common sense and stay safe to make it a fantastic holiday.

If alcohol is part of the mix, remember to designate a sober driver when traveling. There is nothing more heart-gripping and gut-wrenching than to spend the holiday in the slammer, face exorbitant amounts of money on attorney’s fees, bail money, court costs, drunk driver classes and substance abuse evaluation.

There’s more. The charge involving operation while intoxicated has lingering effects with harsher consequences, including:

n Criminal history.

n Loss of driving privileges over an extended period of time.

The predicament can also have devastating effects on upset family members.

It is also important for boaters to remember this charge can follow them into the water.

The website http://www.boat-ed.com/ia/handbook/alcohol.htm states the following, “Iowa law prohibits anyone from boating while intoxicated (BWI). This includes the operation of any vessel or manipulation of any water skis, a surfboard, or similar device while under the influence of alcohol; marijuana; a narcotic, hypnotic, or other drug; or any combination of these substances.”

While some folks have a carefree attitude about drinking and driving, there is no scenario that can sink as low as a vehicular homicide caused by a drunk driver.

It is senseless, yet avoidable.

Think before you drink.

You will be doing all of us a huge favor.
