It’s an idea that a lot of people have talked about for a long time, and it’s finally happening.

The first-ever Gospel on the Square concert will be held today starting at 4 p.m. on First Avenue North just north of Library Square in Estherville.

Featured groups include woodwinds at 4 p.m., Cornerstone at 4:40, Steve Condreay at 5 p.m., Grandview Baptist praise team at 5:30 p.m., Andrea Lange at 6 p.m., Steve Lange at 6:30 p.m., the Jesse James Band at 7 p.m. and Billie James at 8 p.m. Pastor Joel Jorgenson of Grandview Baptist Church will be master of ceremonies.

Having a concert in downtown Estherville is a great way to not only provide local entertainment but to also bring people in from outside to enjoy our wonderful community.

Interestingly enough, if you look at old photos of Library Square from the early 1900s you’ll see huge gatherings of people in the square that then included a beautiful fountain just south of the library. Thousands gathered in Estherville to commemorate the Fourth of July, Labor Day and other special events.

As times get tight, we could all do well to look for entertainment close to home. And the Gospel in the Square is just the sort of thing that will appeal to a wide variety of people regardless of age or background.

So come bring your lawn chair, enjoy some of the food for sale and listen to your favorite gospel music tonight in Library Square in Estherville.
