We’ve paid homage to the students who have excelled in the classroom this week.

Today we take a moment to congratulate a student-athlete for his efforts at the 2010 State Track and Field Meet.

With his throws in the shot put on Thursday, Kyle Farmer became the first Estherville Lincoln Central state champion in any sport since 2001.

ELC has had its share of state qualifiers in several individual and team sports over the past decade. Looking at the banners in the high-school gym, the girls cross country team has had the most success. ELC has been part of the football playoffs three times in the past decade and the ELC boys golf team also has made a trip to state over that time span.

Individually, ELC has sent several relays and individuals to the state track meet every year.

However, the only other state champion was Katie Nelson who won the Class 3A girls shot put in 2001.

Farmer’s achievement on Thursday merits our congratulations.

P.S. Congratulations to Kaylene Vos and Erin Olson for qualifying for the state tennis tournament.
