You never saw prouder parents in your life than you saw at the Guardian Angel Preschool graduation Friday.

Dads smiled and took videos as moms cried to see their little ones at their first graduation. There will be more graduations, though, and more videos and undoubtedly more tears until college graduation comes and parents give a sigh of relief that school – not to mention tuition bills – is finally over.

If you really think about it, you come to realize just how lucky we are here in Emmet County to have the educational facilities that we do.

Not only do we have a fine early childhood education system, but we also have great K-12 schools, Iowa Lakes Community College which attracts students internationally, and Buena Vista University’s Professional and Online Studies Program through which students can complete their four-year degree programs right here in Estherville.

Wisely, more and more parents – and students – are coming to realize that you don’t have to travel halfway around the country to get a world-class education. You can do it right here in Estherville.

And the savings are enormous. Students can commute from home to Iowa Lakes rather than stay in the dorm, if they wish. And after they graduate from Iowa Lakes, they can complete their four-year degrees at Buena Vista University’s Online and Professional Studies Program by taking classes at night or online.

It’s no wonder that more students are choosing to attend college locally. In fact, Iowa Lakes’ summer program registrations are up 30 percent from a year ago. People know a great value when they see it, and they know they can get a great education right here in Emmet County as well.
