Thumbs up, thumbs down

By Staff | Feb 21, 2014

Thumbs up to the Dancetastics dancers from the Regional Wellness Center who performed for Estherville Good Samaritan Society residents Monday. It was a great, non-threatening venue where the girls could perform and it was wonderful entertainment for the residents.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central fifth-grade teachers on a wonderful day-long session they provided for their students on the Underground Railroad. The students incorporated technology into their research by scanning codes and watching videos about the Underground Railroad. They learned from historian and quilt maker Jeanne Handeland the key role that quilts played as escaped slaves fled north. And they learned what it must have felt like for slaves to escape toward freedom. Every student was actively engaged and the teachers had a great time as well.

Thumbs up to Dan Kramer who joined the team at Jared Colegrove State Farm Insurance Jan. 6.

Thumbs up to Jon Jackson and Jason Planting who opened J&J Customs and Small Engines at 202 S. Sixth St. Feb. 3.

Thumbs up to the Regional Wellness Center on serving the people of Estherville and Emmet County for 10 years. The RWC is a wonderful asset to our community and it’s had a huge role in making a lot of people healthier.

Thumbs up to Emmet County naturalist Jenna Pollock and the kids taking part in winter survival day 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Emmet County Nature Center east of Wallingford. The kids will certainly have fun, and possibly one of them will find the experience will one day save his or her life.

Thumbs up to the Estherville Lincoln Central one-act play ensemble on being selected as one of eight out of 191 ensembles to perform at All State – a remarkable accomplishment.

Thumbs up to the area wrestlers who qualified for the state individual tournament. In Class 2A are Estherville Lincoln Central’s Zack Snyder, Oscar Ramirez, Blake Gjerde and Chase Bonner along with Spirit Lake’s Zach Skopec and David Trucksess. In Class 1A, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire’s Cody Thompson represents the Titans.
