Thumbs up, thumbs down

By Staff | Apr 25, 2014

Thumbs up to Sam Clovis and Scott Schaben, US senate candidates, and US Rep. Steve King for coming to Estherville to bring their message to Emmet County Republicans Tuesday. Regardless of a person’s party affiliation, we think voters should sit up and take special notice of the candidates who respect us enough to come visit us on our own doorstep.

Thumbs up to NorthStar Bank for taking the time and providing the personnel for a tour for Mrs. Thelen’s first-graders Wednesday. For a bank to do something like this shows that they really care about kids – and their future customers.

Thumbs up to Mark Almquist, Estherville Fareway manager, as he plans a very active – and perhaps we should say a very musical – retirement. Almquist is a living example of the values that have made Fareway known as a family oriented company for generations.

Thumbs up to the Friends of Fort Defiance as they plan the dedication of the Whitetail Ridge Interpretive Trail 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3. The trail is located just off the west parking lot at Fort Defiance State Park. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

A huge thumbs up also goes to the Emmet County Community Foundation that assisted in completing the trail. This is a very visible example of the good the foundation is doing in Emmet County.

Thumbs up to Graettinger-Terril, North Union and Estherville Lincoln Central students as they celebrate an alcohol-free prom this weekend.

Thumbs up to all those who made the 93rd Running of the Estherville Relays a great high school event on Thursday, April 17. Three meet records were broken. Thumbs up also to Justin Heinrichs for setting a school record in the 400-meter low hurdles.

Thumbs up to Estherville Lincoln Central fourth-grade art students for “unleashing” their creativity with their art to help raise money for the Emmet County Animal Shelter. You can view the work of these young artists and vote for your favorite by making a donation at locations throughout Estherville. See the art April 25 through May 1 at Citizens Community Credit Union, May 1-7 at Avera Holy Family Hospital, May 7-13 at Bank Plus, May 13-20 at Employees Credit Union and May 20-25 at the Regional Wellness Center.
