Thumbs up, thumbs down
Thumbs up to the 4-Hers, parents, leaders, volunteers and Extension staff who put on another great Emmet County – the 146th. That’s an incredible legacy to live up to, and everyone is living up to it admirably. Let’s also give a thumbs up to the state fair exhibitors.
Thumbs up to Rod and Jill Arends for having the August Yard of the Month. What with the hot then cool, wet then dry conditions we’ve had through the summer, it’s tough keeping a lawn up, much less making it beautiful. Thumbs up as well to the Estherville Garden Club for sponsoring the award.
Thumbs up to the Midway Country Club which is celebrating its centennial this year. That’s a remarkably long time to continue a mission of serving others.
Thumbs up to Thomas Wood who brought the Remembering the Fallen exhibit to Estherville for Sweet Corn Days. The exhibit will be in the former Heartland Technology building at 17 N. Sixth St. all day today. A big thumbs up goes as well to the Patriot Guard Riders and CMA members who rode escort for the Wall of Honor into Estherville. We hope everyone gets to see this memorial to Iowans who have fallen in the War in Terror.
Thumbs up to Emmet County Naturalist Jenna Pollock for holding a great geocaching session Thursday night at the Emmet County Nature Center. Jenna continually strives to come up with new and exciting activities for kids of all ages in Emmet County.
Thumbs up to everyone on the Estherville Sweet Corn Days Committee for another great Sweet Corn Days. What started as a parade and a few events in 1998 has grown into a four-day event packed with activities that have outgrown their original area. The event is attracting families and Estherville High School and Estherville Lincoln Central High School alumni back to Estherville to celebrate the event. We hope you enjoy Sweet Corn Days today and tomorrow – it’s the bash of the summer!
Thumbs up to the Friends of Fort Defiance who are holding a work night 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the picnic shelter. If you want to help, please wear old clothes and bring old paintbrushes because they’ll be staining the shelter uprights. Memberships in the Friends of Fort Defiance are just $10 for families or individuals and may be sent to: Friends of Fort Defiance, P.O. Box 314, Estherville, IA 51334.
