Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up to the Estherville Area Chamber of Commerce for donating part of the proceeds from the Fright Hike to the Friends of Fort Defiance. This is a great example of area organizations working together for the benefit of all.

Thumbs up the Estherville Lincoln Central Middle School musicians on a wonderful Christmas band concert Monday night at Roosevelt Auditorium. We should also give a huge thumbs up to the parents who pay for musical instruments and lessons so their children can develop their skills. It’s a big sacrifice for students and parents, but when you see the smiles of pride on their faces during a concert, you know it was all worth it.

Thumbs up to Lori Westfall, new manager of Firestone in Estherville. Lori has been with the company for a long time, and is probably the most familiar face when people come in the door.

Thumbs up to the Estherville United Methodist Church Men for another great pancake and sausage supper Thursday night at the church. This is a great fundraiser for some very worthy causes. If you haven’t had a chance to go to one of these suppers yet, they’re from 5-7 p.m. the third Thursday of every month.

Thumbs up to Emmet County Public Health on receiving the Iowa Family Support Credential Friday. They also deserve a big thumbs up for the Healthy Beginnings Workshop they’re sponsoring.

Thumbs up to all the Estherville Lincoln Central preschool students taking part in the Christmas concert coming up 10 a.m. Monday at Roosevelt Auditorium. If you want to see a darling concert, you’d better see this one. And you’d better get there early for a good seat.

Thumbs up to all teachers as they give exams and grade papers at the end of the semester. When you think of all the work they’re doing, just as they’re also trying to get ready for Christmas, you can understand why they might get a little on edge. Hint to hubbys: You can get a lot of points with Mom by pitching in right now.

Thumbs up to the Iowa Lakes Community College womens basketball team which went to Spirit Lake Friday to volunteer at a shelter. These young women left to volunteer with the same spirit and vibrance they have on the gym floor – way to go, ladies!
