An amazing year in Estherville

To the Editor:

Hi, I’m Doris van der Laan and I’m a foreign exchange student from The Netherlands. I always had the dream to live in the United States, go to a high school and live the American dream. I couldn’t have been more excited when I got the phone call that I had a host family in Estherville, Iowa. The More family decided to invite me into their family, along with another foreign exchange student George (Dorde) from Serbia. It was amazing. The Mores showed George and I what the American life is like. I learned an incredibly amount about this country and we had a lot of fun together. Now I’m getting ready to go home and it’s time to say goodbye and thank you. First of all I want to thank Mark, Sara, Maddie and Logan More for welcoming George (Dorde) and I into their home and family. Then, I want to thank my community representative Shirley Nickel with Ayusa because without her I wouldn’t have a host family. I want to thank the entire More Family, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins for including me in their family and letting me have an incredible year here. It was amazing and I will never forget it. The teachers and staff at Estherville Lincoln High School are incredible, they included me in everything and helped me so much, thank you. Estherville is a community you should be proud to live in. You are caring people and I find it amazing that you will open your homes to exchange students such as George and myself. The only way we can come is if someone opens their home to us like the More family did! I hope a lot more students get to experience their dream right here in Estherville just like I did.
