Midgets notch first win of 2015 season
Estherville Lincoln Central players quickly put Thursday’s season-opening loss behind them as the Midgets defeated Sibley-Ocheyedan 10-0 in five innings on Friday.
In his first varsity start on the mound, Lucas Gardner struck out nine batters walked two and gave up two hits on the night.
“Lucas had a good start and we got him some run support,” said ELC coach Lee Evans. “It was good for him-he’s a hard worker.”
Evans also liked the way his team did its work at the plate.
“We just had a better approach and put a good swing on the ball,” he said.
After stranding a couple runners in the first inning, Bryce Mann started off the second with a single, took second on a passed ball and scored on a single by Dalton Christoffer. Christoffer stole second and went to third when Briar Rowley reached on a General error before scoring on a pssed ball. Zach Humble then drew a walk and the runners advanced when Zach Snyder grounded out to the pitcher. A double by Evan Olesen scored Rowley with Humble scoring when Gardner grounded out to the shortstop as ELC took a 5-0 lead.
In the third inning, Mann again led off and reached on an error. He stole second and Christoffer then drew a walk. Sibley-Ocheydan got the first out when Rowley hit a grounder back to the pitcher and the Generals got Mann on the force out at third base. But Humble then drew a walk to load the bases. After a pitching change, Snyder drew a walk to force in one run. Olesen came up with his second big hit of the night as a triple to the left side of center field brought in three runs. He then scored when Gardner reached on an error.
ELC finished the night with five hits as Olesen went 2-2 with four RBI. Christoffer and Humble each were 1-2 while Mann was 1-3.
ELC (1-1 overall) is on the road Tuesday against MOC-Floyd Valley and at Hull to face Western Christian on Wednesday.
