Blackhawks downed – Novak notches double-double with 29 points, 13 rebounds

By Staff | Dec 11, 2007

ESTHERVILLE — Southeastern didn’t have anybody that could stop Iowa Lakes’ post players as the two teams faced off in Estherville on Sunday.

Shanda Novak scored 29 points and Kym Zitzner had 18 to lead the Lakers to a 97-66 over the Blackhawks.

In the second meeting between the two teams, Iowa Lakes won 72-40 in the first match on Nov. 17, Coach Brian Radtke was looking for better defensive play from his squad.

“They shouldn’t have scored 60,” he said.

Several times during the game, Laker defenders trailed players cutting through the lane.

However Southeastern had no answer for Novak and Zitzner.

Novak scored 13 of the team’s first 16 points, including a 3-pointer from the corner, as the Lakers led 16-4.

When Novak went to sit down for a few minutes, Southeastern battled back to within six points, but Hannah Downing and Karissa Kramer both hit key shots to push the lead back to 11.

Leading 28-19, Novak and Zitzner combined to score the next 16 points under the basket to push the lead to 44-26.

Iowa Lakes led 51-31 at the break.

In the second half, the visitors never got within 20 points. Meanwhile, if the Lakers happened to struggle for a few plays, somebody would step up and knock down a trey, whether it was Samantha Boje, Kramer, Sam Widmer or Kristin Patterson.

Kramer was the only other Laker to reach double digits as she scored 17 points and dished out six assists. All 10 Lakers were in the scoring column.

Iowa Lakes (7-2, 3-0) hosts Minnesota West on Wednesday. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
