Lakers fail Eagles’ test – No. 6 Kirkwood too much in first meeting
ESTHERVILLE — The Iowa Lakes men’s basketball team took on its toughest test of the season as No. 6 Kirkwood came to town on Saturday.
The Lakers came away to discover they’re not among the elite teams yet as they lost 89-69.
While matching the Eagles blow-for-blow for much of the first half, Kirkwood always had an answer.
When the Lakers tied the game at 6-6 on a 3-pointer by Mitch Bain, Kirkwood responded with two quick treys.
A basket by David Fox, another three from Bain and a free throw by Zach Fenceroy tied the game at 12-12 at the 13:13 mark, but the visitors went on a quick 7–0 run.
Iowa Lakes came back again, getting with two on a 3-pointer by Jimmie Marshall at 23-21 and managed to keep stay within range.
When Cornelius vines hit back-to-back treys, the Lakers trailed by just one, 35-34.
However the Eagles scored the final seven points of the half to lead 42-34.
The Lakers’ Jackson Parr hit the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to six, but Kirkwood responded with a 9-0 run.
The Lakers couldn’t get the defensive stops it needed to make a run as the Eagles kept the lead in double digits the rest of the game.
Iowa Lakes coach Troy Larson summed up the loss succinctly.
“They are so much better coached than us. We’re not in the same realm,” he said. “They have better players at every position.”
He added it was good to play someone that exposed the Lakers inconsistencies.
“When they score, our mentality is to come down and score,” Larson said. “What we need to do as a collective unit, is say we won’t allow any more baskets.”
Fox led the Lakers with 13 points while Vines and Bain each scored 12 and Jeff Clark Neal had 10.
Kirkwood was led by 6-foot point guard Ali Farokhmanesh of Iowa City, who tossed in 33 points.
Iowa Lakes (6-3, 1-1) hosts Minnesota West on Wednesday.
