Midgets finally back on the mats – ELC competes in its first tournament of the season

EMMETSBURG — Estherville Lincoln Central didn’t have a very good day in its first tournament of the season at Emmetsburg on Saturday.

However, it was good just to get on the mats.

The Midgets, who have only wrestled one double dual prior to the tourney due to weather cancellations, came away with three fourth-place finishes and two fifth-place finishes.

Placing fourth were Joel Christensen (130), Nate Howard (160) and Spenser Schichtl (215).

Fifth-place finishes were Ryan Kaltved (135) and DJ Clinton (189).

Howard was the only ELC wrestler to win a first-round match with a 7-3 decision over Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted’s Tyler Schmeling. he then lost by fall to Central Lyon’s Jeff Gacke in 3:02.

In the consolation bracket, he pinned Storm Lake’s Tony Pertzborn in 4:15 before falling to Okoboji’s Dylan Chapman 5-3 in the third-place match.

Christensen won by fall in a play-in match beating Jesse Vander Streek in 1:27, but then lost by fall to eventual champion Cole Clarken of Fort Dodge in 3:43.

In the consolation, Christensen won a 15-4 decision over Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove’s Dalton Hemer and then won 6-4 over Tanner Boyd of Humboldt to get to the third-place match. However he lost by fall to Storm Lake’s Jose Diaz in 3:38.

Schichtl lost by fall to LeMars’ Andrew Pritchard to open the day, but came back with a pin over Odebolt’s Nick Reis in 4:21. He then pinned Fort Dodge’s Sean Springer in 1:21 before losing the third-place match to Pritchard in 2:34.

Kaltved won his fifth-place match by pinning the E’Hawks’ Blake Willey in 4:51. Clinton also won his fifth-place match with a pin by defeating Humboldt’s Joel Hanson in 1:23.

Other ELC wrestlers competing at the tournament who did not place were Kyle Tribby (119), Nathan Spoo (125) and Shane Wegner-Mendosa (hwt).

ELC returns to action Emmetsburg on Thursday for a double dual with the E’Hawks and LeMars.
